The Frontier
Science & tech breakthroughs in AI models, hardware, and computing that define what's possible
Voters Aren’t Waiting for November to Challenge Officials Over Data Centers. Opposition to data-center projects is moving into local electoral politics, with officials facing recall campaigns over their support for computing sites, according to the New York Times. The disputes centre on the local consequences of hosting rapidly expanding data-center infrastructure.
Liquid AI Releases LFM2.5-DSpark Draft Models for Faster Decoding. Liquid AI released LFM2.5-DSpark draft models, approximately 300 million-parameter models designed for speculative decoding with LFM2.5. The company reports up to 3.18-times faster decoding while retaining identical greedy-decoding outputs.
Anthropic Job Posting Suggests an Alberta Data-Center Buildout. Anthropic has posted roles for a Canadian compute lead and an Alberta-based data-center community engagement manager. The compute-lead posting says the role will be responsible for bringing gigawatts of compute online in Canada.
Model Developments
Latest AI model releases, capabilities, and technical breakthroughs shaping the competitive landscape
Nvidia Finds Simple Linear Math Can Replace Costly AI Model Handoffs. Nvidia researchers introduced a cross-model KV-cache transfer method that maps a source model's prefilled cache to a target model using linear transformations. The approach is designed to avoid recomputing long conversation histories when agent systems hand tasks between smaller and larger models, with reported speedups of up to 2.7 times on compatible model pairs.
DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Vision-Exp Adds OpenAI-Compatible Vision APIs. DeepSeek published API documentation for its experimental DeepSeek-V4-Flash-Vision model, which accepts image and text inputs through OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions and Responses APIs. The model supports JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP files for image description, screenshot text extraction and chart analysis, subject to a 48 MiB request-body limit.

Chinese Regulators Tell Tesla to Fix Nearly 3 Million Cars. Chinese regulators ordered Tesla to add emergency rear-door-opening warnings to 2.98 million Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China. The action follows increased scrutiny of electronically controlled door systems after crashes in which occupants were unable to exit vehicles that had lost power.
Starcloud Raises $250M Series A Extension at a $2.3B Valuation. Starcloud raised a $250 million Series A extension at a $2.3 billion post-money valuation to develop AI data centers in low Earth orbit. The round brought the Redmond company’s total funding to $450 million and included NVIDIA, Cisco Investments, Benchmark, EQT and other investors.

A County Got Rich From Data Centers. Some Question the Cost. Loudoun County, Virginia, now hosts more than 250 data centers that generate substantial tax revenue. County officials and residents are questioning the area’s dependence on data-center income as concerns grow over the costs associated with continued development.

CISA Releases Logging, Visibility and Operational Standards Guidance. CISA released a Logging Reference Architecture for federal civilian executive-branch agencies, developed with OMB and the CISO Council. The guidance supports agency logging plans required under OMB Memorandum M-26-14 and sets a risk-based approach to logging, network visibility and operational standards.
The Performance Edge
Peak performance science for sustained execution in high-stakes environments
Three Minutes of Sprinting Produced a Bigger Molecular Response Than 90 Minutes of Exercise. Researchers at Rockefeller University reported that six 30-second sprint intervals produced immediate changes in nearly one-quarter of measured blood proteins and more than 200 metabolites. The molecular response was substantially larger than that observed after 90 minutes of moderate cycling, and included proteins associated with lower risks of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
