The Frontier

Science & tech breakthroughs in AI models, hardware, and computing that define what's possible

Anthropic job postings point to Alberta data-centre plans. Anthropic has posted roles for a Canadian compute lead and an Alberta-based data-centre community engagement manager. The compute-lead posting says the role will bring gigawatts of compute online in Canada; Anthropic confirmed the postings but did not provide details on its strategy.

Anthropic is staffing for a Canadian compute buildout, not exploratory hiring: its compute lead is tasked with bringing gigawatts online, alongside an Alberta community-engagement role. The test is an announced Alberta site or data-centre partner.

BDC’s VC revenue loss is offset by portfolio appreciation. In fiscal 2026, the Business Development Bank of Canada reported a $70.9 million revenue loss on venture-capital investments, but generated $217.8 million in net income after a $401.5 million increase in unrealized portfolio appreciation. BDC’s VC portfolio reached a fair value of $3.68 billion, with 848 investments in Canadian companies and investment firms during the year.

BDC's C$401M unrealized bump erased its C$71M revenue loss, showing mark-to-model tailwinds, not exits. Portfolio now C$3.68B on 848 stakes, yet still <3% of 2025 global AI raise, leaving Canadian founders reliant on state cash. If IPOs stay gated, expect BDC to shop secondaries to U.S. funds in 2027.

The physical backbone of AI: compute, data centers, supply chains, and the geopolitics of energy

Loudoun County weighs the cost of data-centre wealth. Loudoun County, Virginia, home to more than 250 data centres, faces growing concern from officials and residents over its dependence on facility-generated tax revenue.

250 data centers in Loudoun now dominate local power demand. At just 15 MW each they pull 3.8 GW, roughly four reactors and most of the 5 GW spare capacity left on the national grid through 2026. Net effect: Dominion to delay housing hookups or raise rates until new lines land post 2028.

CISA warns of active exploitation of a critical MLflow flaw. CISA warned that threat actors are exploiting a critical vulnerability in MLflow, an open-source platform used for AI engineering and machine-learning lifecycle management. The agency directed federal civilian agencies to address the actively exploited flaw through its known-exploited-vulnerabilities process.

CISA’s KEV action makes MLflow a federal remediation priority: an exploited deployment could compromise experiment tracking, model artifacts and deployment workflows together. Watch for evidence that civilian agencies are closing exposed MLflow instances through the KEV process.

Digital wellness program eases anxiety and depression in adults with chronic conditions. A study published in PLOS Medicine found that a digital wellness program reduced anxiety and depression symptoms among adults with chronic medical conditions. The intervention combined guided movement, breathing and meditation exercises with coping-skills training.

PLOS Medicine’s study positions guided movement, breathing, meditation and coping-skills training as a credible mental-health adjunct for adults with chronic conditions; the test is whether insurers begin reimbursement trials by 2027.

HMRC sends 81,000 warning letters to crypto holders. HM Revenue and Customs sent more than 81,000 warning letters to cryptocurrency holders over potential unpaid capital gains tax in the past year, nearly triple the number sent in 2024, according to an FOI request. The authority noted that taxable disposals can include exchanging one cryptoasset for another and is due to receive expanded powers next year to identify higher-value crypto investors.

HMRC’s 81,172 notices make crypto-to-crypto swaps a central CGT enforcement target, not a peripheral compliance issue. With expanded powers due next year, the test is whether 2027 automatic reporting pushes annual notices above 81,172.

Markets pull back as small caps lag. The S&P 500 fell 0.7%, the Nasdaq 100 declined 1.0%, the Dow Jones dropped 1.2% and the Russell 2000 lost 1.5%. Energy was the only sector higher, up 0.5%, while healthcare fell 1.3%. Coinbase rose 6.7% among notable movers.

Coinbase’s 6.7% rally looks isolated, not proof of broad risk appetite: the Russell 2000 fell 1.5% and energy was the sole gainer, up 0.5%. The test by next week is whether small caps stop lagging; if not, risk-taking remains narrow.
