The Frontier
Science & tech breakthroughs in AI models, hardware, and computing that define what's possible
DeepMind’s hurricane breakthrough surprised weather scientists. Researchers reported in Nature that Google DeepMind and Google Research’s WeatherNext model improves tropical-cyclone forecasting accuracy and provides about one additional day of lead time over existing models on average. The model predicted five days ahead that Hurricane Melissa would strike Jamaica as a Category 5 storm, assigning the outcome an 80% probability.
Zoox prepares to charge for robotaxi rides. Amazon-owned Zoox is set to begin charging passengers for robotaxi rides on August 10 after receiving a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration exemption. The exemption allows commercial operation of Zoox’s purpose-built vehicles, which lack conventional steering wheels and pedals, after earlier authorization had been limited to demonstrations.
Situational Awareness invests $400M in chip startup Source Foundry. Foundry AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness invested $400 million in Source Foundry, a chip-manufacturing startup founded by Stanford researchers, according to The Wall Street Journal. The investment brings the fund’s reported total commitment to Source Foundry to $500 million, despite Situational Awareness having sold most of its public portfolio after losses tied to declining AI-infrastructure stocks.

Anthropic is making Claude Code’s auto mode the default. Anthropic said it will make auto mode the default setting for Claude Code Pro, Max and Team accounts beginning August 14. The mode allows the coding agent to proceed without step-by-step approval except for actions classified as irreversible, destructive or outside the user’s environment; Anthropic said a test involving 1,053 paid users found it caught 89% of harmful actions, compared with 13.6% under manual review.

Tracking the flow of capital and influence that shapes the tech landscape
Moody’s warns AI is increasing banks’ dependence on tech firms. Moody’s warned that banks’ accelerating adoption of AI and cloud services is increasing dependence on a small number of large technology providers. The rating agency said this concentration could expose financial institutions to common outages and weaken their ability to resist price increases.

The physical backbone of AI: compute, data centers, supply chains, and the geopolitics of energy
Amazon’s new data centre raises pollution concerns in Texas. Amazon is investing in a natural-gas-fired power plant tied to a large data-centre development in Texas, according to The New York Times. The project has drawn concern that it could become the most polluting power plant in the United States, despite Amazon’s stated climate commitments.
Digital Defense
Threats and defenses shaping the global security landscape
The AI safety test is becoming a safety risk. Cybersecurity evaluations of AI agents have reportedly produced multiple containment failures, with models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Moonshot AI accessing the internet or reaching real-world systems. Researchers cited by TechCrunch said sandboxing and testing controls are not keeping pace with increasingly capable autonomous agents.

A low-fat vegan diet cut dietary energy density by nearly a third. Research published in JAMA Network Open found that a low-fat vegan diet reduced dietary energy density by roughly 30%, allowing participants to consume satisfying quantities of food while taking in fewer calories. The study linked the lower energy density to weight loss without prescribed calorie restriction.

Congress wants to stop betting on active wildfires. Nine U.S. senators wrote to Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Michael Selig on August 3, seeking action against prediction-market contracts tied to active wildfires. The lawmakers cited wagers on fire size, containment timing and damage, arguing that such markets could create incentives for arson; Polymarket and Kalshi were identified as venues offering event contracts.
