The Frontier
Science & tech breakthroughs in AI models, hardware, and computing that define what's possible
A Queensland data center tests AI’s local license to operate. Residents near Dalby, Queensland, are opposing a proposed 725-hectare data center reportedly costing $31 billion and intended to power Anthropic’s Claude systems. The project has become a focal point for concerns around environmental impact, local infrastructure, and the growing physical footprint of AI computing.
Trump names Jay Clayton White House AI czar. President Donald Trump named Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to serve concurrently as the White House AI czar. Clayton leads the US intelligence community’s 18 agencies and previously chaired the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump’s first term.
Google moves federated learning into trusted execution environments. Google Research described a federated-learning system that shifts gradient computation from devices to attested server-side trusted execution environments. Gboard is already using the system for English and Japanese next-word prediction, with access policies recorded in Sigstore’s Rekor transparency log.
Model Developments
Latest AI model releases, capabilities, and technical breakthroughs shaping the competitive landscape
Anthropic asks Claude users to share voice data. Anthropic has begun asking Claude users to voluntarily contribute voice-conversation data to train and improve its AI models. The request expands its potential sources of multimodal training data beyond text interactions while relying on user consent.
Aleph Alpha releases Kolibri, an open English-German MoE model. Aleph Alpha released Kolibri, an Apache 2.0 open-weight English-German mixture-of-experts model with 78.1 billion total parameters and 3.46 billion active parameters per token. It supports a one-million-token context window and is described as runnable in FP8 on a single Nvidia B200 or H200 GPU.
Capital & Control
Tracking the flow of capital and influence that shapes the tech landscape
Amazon says it no longer uses NDAs for data-center approvals. AWS chief executive Matt Garman said Amazon no longer uses nondisclosure agreements in dealings with government agencies considering data-center projects. The move comes amid organized local opposition, a one-year New York moratorium on permits for large data centers, and more than 100 data-center moratoriums cited by Garman.
Infrastructure & Power
The physical backbone of AI: compute, data centers, supply chains, and the geopolitics of energy
Electrification is working, but the buildout is the hard part. The International Energy Agency said electrification is increasingly aligning energy-security, cost, and emissions objectives, according to comments by Executive Director Fatih Birol at the United Nations. Its assessment also emphasizes the challenge of expanding grids, generation, and related infrastructure quickly enough to support wider electricity use.
Digital Defense
Threats and defenses shaping the global security landscape
DTU breach may expose data from up to 200,000 people. The Technical University of Denmark said hackers accessed its identity and access management system and downloaded a large volume of data. Information associated with as many as 200,000 users may have been exposed.
The Performance Edge
Peak performance science for sustained execution in high-stakes environments
Diet drinks matched water for weight loss in a major trial. A two-year randomized clinical trial involving 493 adults with overweight or obesity found that diet soft drinks sweetened with aspartame, acesulfame-K, or sucralose produced weight-loss and maintenance results broadly comparable with water. Both groups improved in waist size, body composition, and several metabolic measures, with no reported evidence that diet drinks increased appetite or metabolic harm.
