Science & tech breakthroughs in AI models, hardware, and computing that define what's possible

Chinese firms turned further to science after U.S. restrictions. A Science study found that Chinese companies placed on the U.S. Entity List increased their reliance on scientific publications and patent-cited research after losing access to certain U.S. proprietary technologies and joint R&D arrangements. The analysis examines restrictions introduced amid heightened China-U.S. tensions from 2018 and documents a shift in how targeted firms source technical knowledge.

2018 Entity List restrictions redirected targeted Chinese firms toward science, not merely away from U.S. technology. Watch for later-listed firms’ patent science-citation shares to exceed comparable rivals in their first post-listing patents.

Iran and China are using autonomous AI influence campaigns. Iranian and Chinese actors, along with Israeli firms, have combined Chinese open-source AI models with AI agents to run autonomous online influence campaigns, according to the New York Times. The campaigns mark a move beyond manually managed disinformation operations toward systems that can generate, adapt and distribute persuasive material at scale.

Small AI models are enabling autonomous battlefield drones. Scaleout Systems, a NATO-backed startup founded by Uppsala University researchers, is deploying compact machine-learning models that run directly on drones used for reconnaissance and attack missions. The company shifted from vehicle-edge AI to defense applications after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Crusoe raises $3.9B for massive and modular AI data centers. AI-factory developer Crusoe raised $3.9 billion in a Series F financing, valuing the company at $30.9 billion. The round, backed by investors including Nvidia, Mubadala Capital, GIC and Qatar Investment Authority, will fund existing projects including an OpenAI-used site in Abilene, Texas, alongside modular AI data centers.

Crusoe pulls $3.9B Series F at $30.9B, vaulting it above Mistral’s $6B tier and giving Nvidia (participating) a GPU-anchored foothold in off-grid AI compute. Sovereign cash from Mubadala and QIA locks up energy-rich sites; Net effect: hyperscalers to bid for Spark capacity before 2027 power crunch hits.

Mazama Energy raises $135M for superhot-rock geothermal. Khosla-backed geothermal company Mazama Energy raised an oversubscribed $135 million Series B to develop horizontal wells in superhot rock, targeting 15 megawatts of generation per well. The company said its Oregon site could support 10 gigawatts of capacity and plans to begin generating electricity next year.

The physical backbone of AI: compute, data centers, supply chains, and the geopolitics of energy

AWS launches GPU-aware inference routing for SageMaker HyperPod. Amazon Web Services launched SageMaker HyperPod Inference Gateway, a Kubernetes-native routing layer for large-language-model inference on Amazon EKS and HyperPod infrastructure. AWS said the gateway uses GPU-aware routing based on KV-cache conditions, long-context generation activity and loaded LoRA adapters, and can reduce first-token latency by up to 82%.

AWS cuts first token lag 82%, yet each 150MW HyperPod pulls smelter-scale load, eating 40% of Alberta spare capacity as new lines take 3-7 years. If it fails to lock nuclear or wind PPAs by 2027, compute growth hits a power wall.

Cisco discloses its second actively exploited zero-day in two days. Cisco disclosed CVE-2026-76460, a maximum-severity vulnerability in Cisco Identity Services Engine that was exploited before public disclosure and patching. The API flaw allows remote authentication bypass and full control of affected ISE devices.

Cisco’s exploited ISE bypass elevates identity infrastructure from entry point to control-plane target: CVE-2026-76460 enables full device control. The test by Q4 is whether affected ISE devices show unauthorized policy changes.

RFK Jr. names eight members to preventive medicine task force. U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. named eight members to the 16-person U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which issues evidence-based grades for services including depression screening, statin use, mammography and colonoscopy. The task force’s A and B recommendations trigger mandatory no-cost insurance coverage under U.S. law, making its membership consequential for preventive-care access.

RFK Jr.'s eight picks may tilt USPSTF votes, threatening no-cost coverage for mammograms, colonoscopies, statins and other screens relied on by roughly 150 million insured Americans. The panel resumes after a yearlong freeze; 2027 grade shifts below A or B would let insurers scale back payment within a year.

Markets slip while Coinbase climbs. The S&P 500 fell 0.4%, the Nasdaq 100 edged down 0.1%, the Dow Jones dropped 0.7% and the Russell 2000 declined 0.9%. Consumer Staples lagged, down 0.6%, while Coinbase rose 7.6% and Super Micro Computer fell 4.0%.

Coinbase’s 7.6% gain was a clear outlier against broad index declines. Watch by Q4 end whether it remains up at least 7.6% from this session while the S&P 500 stays lower; failure would undermine the relative-strength signal.
