ChatGPT Ads reaches a $1B run rate. OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch. The company is expanding direct ad purchases through Ads Manager to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, alongside subscriptions, enterprise products and APIs.

OpenAI hit a $1B ads run rate in under 200 days, monetizing ChatGPT’s 1B weekly users faster than Google’s search ads needed years to reach the same scale. The speed shows generative chat can capture high-intent budgets previously locked to search. Next test is scaling ads without cannibalizing subscription and API revenue.

NASA's Roman telescope launches for deep-space surveys. NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy and is heading to the Sun-Earth L2 point. NASA says it will survey the sky roughly 1,000 times faster than Hubble and generate about 1.4 terabytes of data daily while studying dark matter, dark energy and exoplanets.

Bolt seeks up to $27M in pay-to-play financing. Bolt is raising up to $27 million in bridge financing from existing investors through a convertible note with a pay-to-play provision. Investors that do not participate risk substantial dilution as the checkout company seeks capital after its valuation fell from $11 billion in 2022 to $300 million.

Bolt’s $27M pay-to-play bridge shifts influence to investors funding a company marked down from $11B to $300M, while nonparticipants risk substantial dilution. Watch participation in the note.

The physical backbone of AI: compute, data centers, supply chains, and the geopolitics of energy

AI data centres could triple water consumption. An energy researcher projects annual data-centre water consumption could reach 644 billion litres this decade without improvements in water efficiency. The estimate suggests AI-driven data-centre expansion could triple the sector's water use over the period.

644B litres makes water efficiency a core AI data-centre constraint this decade. Without improvements, sector water use could triple; the test is whether 500MW campuses can secure water alongside the electricity demand of Calgary.

McKesson confirms cloud-account breach. McKesson said attackers accessed several cloud-hosted accounts and exfiltrated data affecting its oncology and medical-surgical businesses. ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the incident, which may involve millions of patient records, while McKesson warned customers of intermittent service degradation.

McKesson’s breach makes service continuity the immediate risk for oncology and medical-surgical customers. The test is whether intermittent degradation persists.

The Performance Edge

A short workout or long nap may blunt sleep-loss effects. A McGill University study published in PNAS found that healthy young adults who went 30 hours without sleep performed better on memory tests after either a 20-minute aerobic workout or a 90-minute nap than participants who stayed awake. Participants who napped performed about 22% better on memory measures than the awake control group.

McGill’s 90-minute nap is the clearest acute memory countermeasure, with a 22% edge over staying awake. The test is whether that advantage persists in adults beyond healthy young participants after 30 hours without sleep.

Markets retreat as energy outperforms. The S&P 500 fell 0.5%, the Nasdaq 100 declined 0.3%, the Dow Jones dropped 0.7% and the Russell 2000 lost 0.9%. Energy led sectors with a 1.4% gain while industrials fell 1.1%; COIN rose 5.6%, TSLA gained 4.9% and AMZN declined 3.3%.

1.4% energy gain marked a sector rotation, not a broad sell-off: all four major indexes fell while industrials dropped 1.1%. In the next session, the test is whether energy remains ahead of industrials.
